(Parts such as the Hammer Nose & Spring, Stirrup and Pins COULD also be used on the 686 No Dash)**** Up for sale is a Nice overall condition, INCOMPLETE Stainless Service Hammer Assembly that originated from a well cared-for Smith & Wesson 681 No Dash L-Frame revolver. The factory original finish on this vintage Hammer Assembly maintains nearly all of the Hammer body’s color. There are some light handling / wear marks present, and a relatively minimal presence of “pivot marks”, or curved-shape rub marks that generally appear from normal use from the Hammer Body swinging back and forth in the action of the Revolver. The spring-loaded Hammer Nose is in great shape, and the Checkering on the Spur is sharp and in very favorable condition, and the Stirrup on the bottom rear of the Hammer is fully operational as well. Most importantly, the contact point that engages the base of the Hammer (to where it connects and locks in double-action mode to the top of the Trigger, once installed) shows some faint evidence of normal use, but is clean and unaltered: So many times we see examples of these Hammers that have succumbed to someone’s attempt at an “action job” … No such alteration has been done to this Hammer!! PLEASE NOTE – THIS HAMMER ASSEMBLY IS MISSING THESE COMPONENTS: – The Hammer “Release Lever” – The Hammer Release Lever Spring – The Hammer Release Lever Pin You would either need to use / salvage these parts from your existing revolver’s hammer, or source them elsewhere. **** PLEASE READ THIS INFORMATION CAREFULLY AND COMPLETELY:This Hammer is native to the Smith and Wesson Model 681 No Dash(and could be used additionally ONLY on a 686 No Dash Model – Read WHY, below!) **** To Clarify, this Assembly is only truly compatible with: – Model 681 No Dash. The 686 No Dash Models came with a wider, .375″ Semi-Target hammer, but the 681 Hammer in this listing COULD be used on a 686 No Dash if you prefer. The two are IDENTICAL, with the exception of the width of the Spur. INCOMPATIBLE MODELS Include (Do NOT purchase if you have the following) : – Model 686-1 and 681-1, which have Hammer Assemblies that are nearly identical in construction to the original “No Dash” older siblings, but Hammers included on these later models now have a slight bevel cut on one side of the bottom hole in the Hammer (the large Radius Stud opening – in other words, the pivot bar in the frame) that goes thru the Hammer when installed. If you attempt to re-assemble a 681-1 or a 686-1 with the updated Radius Stud Package with a hammer that does not have the beveled hole cut, it is a REAL BUGGER to get the gun back together, if possible at all.. Please discuss this with a gunsmith prior to considering purchase, and for general applications we simply advise against the use of a 681 No Dash, nor a 686 No Dash Hammer on these models – In fact, we completely discourage it as attempting to mill a bevel to the Radius Stud Hole in the Hammer may negatively affect the Hardened Steel’s integrity, and will most certainly damage the Flash-Chromed finish in that spot. – 686-2, 686-3 and 686-4 revolvers (As well as the 681-2 and 681-3) are also NOT COMPATIBLE. Compared to the first 686 No-Dash, 686-1, 681 No Dash and 681-1 models, on the 686-2 and 681-2 the Hammer Bushing inside the Frame of the revolver was changed, thus resulting in an ever-so-slightly “Shorter” Hammer Nose. So, this piece would theoretically “install” in a later 686-2 or later, but it would be an incorrect fit: The Hammer Nose would be TOO LONG to function properly and reliably in a later Model 686 or 681 – You would be risking puncturing your primers, which in turn can damage the Hammer Nose Bushing and also risk damage to the Frame of your revolver. – 686 M models are also NOT COMPATIBLE (same applies for a 681 M). These were the original 686 No Dash and 686-1 Models (as well as 681 M models) that were factory retrofitted to update the Hammer Nose Bushing and the Hammer Nose length. The update essentially turned the 686 No Dash and 686-1 models into a “686-2”. – Finally, once the 686-5’s were produced, S&W started to move to an entirely different type of Striker with the internal firing pin….. If you are looking for a specific fit in a S&W hammer and this information is not cited in other listings you are considering, we would certainly advise you to start asking questions, because it is imperative that this information is disclosed! As with any vintage gun parts there may be minor imperfections and we have attempted to capture a fair rendition of the condition of the Assembly in the image set. See photos for full description.
