**** S O U T H E R N R H O D E S I A / R H O D E S I A **** 1 9 6 5 UNILATERAL DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE (UDI) FROM GREAT BRITAIN NEVER HINGED (UNMOUNTED) MINT SHEET NUMBER BLOCK OF 4 + OFFICIAL FIRST DAY COVER Sc.# 207, S.G. 358, Mi.# 8 Exceptional fresh condition UDI STAMP HISTORY: On 11 November 1965, Rhodesia unilaterally declared Independence (UDI) from Great Britain. In the capital, Salisbury, the Rhodesian Ministry of Posts asked Mardon Printers if they could print a stamp to commemorate this event, if necessary. Mardon’s only previous stamp-printing experience was in the early 1950s, when they produced Parcel stamps for Rhodesia Railways. On 28 November 1965, the decision to print a stamp to commemorate UDI was made. In just ten days, Mardon designed and produced a 2s6d stamp in sheets of 60, printed by offset lithography, and line perforated 11. The FIRST DAY OF ISSUE was 8 DECEMBER 1965. The stamp shows the Rhodesian Coat of Arms and a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The first sheets off the press had crude, but effective, perforations. Subsequent sheets were of a higher quality. A total of 12,500 sheets were printed. IMAGES SHOW THE SHEET AND VALUE NUMBER (60 x 2s6d = £7:10:0) BLOCK OF 4, AND FRONT & REVERSE OF THE FIRST DAY COVER. THE SINGLE STAMP IS FOR REFERENCE ONLY (not included in this offer). BRIEF HISTORY of the TERRITORY: Annexed by Great Britain as “Southern Rhodesia” in 1923; became part of the “Federation of Rhodesia & Nyasaland” on 1/1/1954; after breakup of Federation, known as “Southern Rhodesia” in 1964, then changed to “Rhodesia” after Malawi independence; “Rhodesia” maintained from November 1965 until December 1979; became independent country of “Zimbabwe” on 17 April 1980. BRITISH & WORLD REACTION: The British Government and Royal Mail did not acknowledge Rhodesia’s UDI, taxing mail with this stamp. Other Post Offices worldwide accepted mail franked with this stamp. It is excellent condition, with no blemishes. It is postmarked with the Cachel Post Office date stamp. Cachel is a small town on the country’s extreme eastern border with Mozambique. It is about 250 miles (400km) southeast of Harare, the capital. (2) Pristine and well-centered never hinged (unmounted) mint upper right corner block of 4 of sheet #786 of the Mardon-printed 2s6d Indepencence stamp.
