With their DC amplifier technology producing ample power, and built-in 5-band SEA graphic equalizer, the JR-S201 is a real sleeper and a great choice for the vintage audiophile!One of the primary features is JVC’s SEA Graphic Equalizer, which provides ±12 dB equalization at five center frequencies that can also be programmed to equalize the signal to the tape recorders. All controls are either switches or the linear slider type. The tuner on the JR-S201 features unique flywheel tuning, both Signal and Tuning meters and a PLL Stereo beacon. In addition to buttons for Inputs & Speakers, it also has buttons for FM Mute, Subsonic Filter, SEA Record, Tape Monitors, Stereo/Mono and a Loudness button that contours the sound dynamics perfectly for low level listening.The manual gives an RMS power rating of 70W, or 35 W/Ch @8Ω with both channels fully driven. Remember, these are what audiophiles call “Vintage Watts,” from an era where, unlike today, it was a sin to manipulate or elaborate the power ratings! The rear panel offers an Aux input, two Tape Loops, one with the PLAY/REC DIN jack found in the higher-end offerings of the era, and Phono Input along with a grounding post for your turntable! It also has an FM DET OUT jack, multiple antenna terminals, a built-in AM antenna and both switched & unswitched AC outlets.The JR-S201 weighs in at just over 23 lbs and measures a sizable 15″ x 6-9/16″ x 19-3/4″ wide! Condition:This beautiful receiver is in “Very Good” condition with minor signs of use and a nice, clean front panel! Aside from a few scuffs to the lid, there is a little worn text and a few light scuffs to the front panel, some too faint to make out well in the pics. We have a great deal of experience with these earlier JVC’s and we know sometimes the front panel text can wear easily. In fact, we have found that simple Windex can remove the text on some models, so we are always very careful when cleaning them and we suggest the lucky new owner do the same. All the original knobs are present & complete, as are the feet and attached AM Antenna & AC cord. The manual has gone missing, but no worries, it’s available online or we will send you the PDF file directly on request. A bonus NEW FM Dipole Antenna is included. Please do inspect all the pictures thoroughly for actual condition.Service:On inspection, this unit was working, but had some flickering lights and scratchiness and inconsistency to the controls, so it went to our tech for the usual servicing. Our tech has experience with these JVC’s and knows there are often issues with the power switch failing. Luckily, the switch has an unused second set of contacts so the power was switched to them. Also, to prevent it from happening again, a damping capacitor was installed to reduce arcing, extending the switch life.A few lamps were still working, but as they are bound to fail we just replace them all with LED’s so you won’t have to worry about them ever again. Cool Blue LEDs were installed in the meters that also illuminate the dial with a brighter blue color. Even the Stereo indicator and hard to replace pointer lamp were upgraded so you won’t have to worry about them either. It’s this kind of thoughtful, preventative servicing that makes it smart to buy from a company with an experienced, in-house technician!
