The designer, James Earle Fraser employed three different Native Americans to model for the design. His initial F can be located under the date. The bison on the back/reverse side of the coin was rumored to be modeled after “Black Diamond” from the New York Central Park Zoo. First year of issue, 1913, had two varieties of the coin. The first featuring the bison on a mound and the second with the base tweaked to a straight line. During the years 1913-1916 Matte Proof versions of the coins were struck for collectors.
