I’m So Laid Back, I’m Laid Out The release in May 1977 of the new 10cc album Deceptive Bends – their third for Mercury Records – marked a crucial junction in the Manchester pop band’s commercial and creative fortunes, and future direction. Just six months earlier, in November 1976, 10cc had effectively become ‘5cc’ when co-founder members Lol Creme and Kevin Godley announced that they were quitting the band, leaving their erstwhile musical colleagues Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart to continue working alone. The music press had a field day. Despite – or perhaps because of – catchy and innovative hits like the Fifties pop pastiche Donna, Rubber Bullets, the mock-philosophical Life Is A Minestrone, the ironic I’m Not In Love (which reached number 1 in the U.K. charts), and I’m Mandy Fly Me, plus best-selling albums with Sheet Music (number 9), The Original Soundtrack (number 4), and How Dare You? (number 5), 10cc had become the brunt of certain music critics’ scathing criticism. Too clever by half’ was one of the lesser-barbed comments. Messrs. Gouldman, Stewart, Godley and Creme’s co-manager Harvey Lisberg was more optimistic about their future. “I don’t regard this as a break-up, because we now have two supergroups instead of one,” he declared. ‘‘The Beatles broke up because afterwards there was no more Beatles music. But there will be more 10cc music through Graham and Eric …” To the self-appointed critics, it didn’t matter an iota that 10cc fans were buying the band’s singles and albums in huge quantities, including in the U.S. where they had secured a long-awaited chart breakthrough with I’m Not In Love, (the single had reached number 2 in the Billboard Hot 100 and perched there for three weeks), just a year prior to Kevin Godley and Lol Creme’s departure. Godley and Creme had decided to quit the band to pursue their own musical interests which included developing the revolutionary ‘Gizmo’ instrument, which they had invented and developed themselves, and also recording their ambitious forthcoming triple-album, Consequences. Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart meanwhile had decided to continue as lOcc, moving their base to Strawberry South studio in Dorking, Surrey, which they co-owned, and recruiting Paul Burgess (who had previously worked with them on tour) as their drummer and occasional band member.The musical relationship between Gouldman and Stewart had been an enduring one, dating back well over a decade to when they had first met in the mid-Sixties. At that time Graham Gouldman was establishing himself as one of the leading pop composers of the era, writing hits for The Yardbirds, The Hollies, and Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders, among other pop bands. Fellow Mancunian Eric Stewart had been a member of the latter group, and thus was cemented a partnership between the two which has continued on-and-off through to the Nineties. Not surprisingly, in the week of its release Deceptive Bends was described by Graham Gouldman, in an interview with Melody Maker’s Harry Doherty, as “the most important album we have ever done’’. Gouldman amplified his comments, with the explanation: “We did have to prove to people that we can still do it. I think we’ve done it single-wise, and now we have got to do it album-wise and on the road as well.’’ Eric Stewart added: “We’ve done an album that we are proud of, and people have got to remember that it is Graham and myself, it’s not the four of us. You’ve gotta take it on its own merits.” The two musicians could be justifiably proud of their album creation. Not only had they written all the songs, they had also played most of the instruments as well (although the highly-respected Jean Roussel played piano on the track, You’ve Got A Cold). “The great thing about 10cc in the past was that we were four minds working towards the same end … but people were starting to take their own egos as the sort of ultimate direction for the group, which we didn’t agree on,” Stewart explained. “Graham and I felt that 10cc has got to be what we’ve always believed in, producing good singles and good albums for people to listen to.”The record-buying public obviously agreed with his sentiments. They had already boosted the slim-line lOcc’s confidence by elevating two of Deceptive Bends’ cuts, Things We Do For Love and Good Morning Judge, into the upper echelons of the British pop charts prior to the album’s release.The former had climbed to number 6 in the Music Week chart towards the end of 1976 while Good Morning Judge had been a number 5 hit in April 1977. When released, Deceptive Bends entered the U.K. pop charts on 14 May 1977 and became the highest- charting album of 10cc’s chart career up to that time, soaring to number 3 and remaining in the Top 75 for 21 weeks (the only other 10cc album to reach as high a position was the 1979 anthology, Greatest Hits). Across the Atlantic waters, Deceptive Bends provided 10cc with their second Top 40 hit album, reaching number 3 I in the Billboard charts, while The Things We Do For Love soared to number 5 and secured a 14-week residency in the Top 40.The single was subsequently certified gold by the authorative RIAA in the U.S.,and the band secured a second U.S.Top 40 entry with People In Love, another single culled from the album, released in June 1977. Meanwhile, back in their home country, Gouldman and Stewart consolidated their chart success with a sell-out tour in May 1977, during which they recruited drummer Stuart Tosh (formerly with Pilot), guitarist Rick Fenn (who had been with a local Manchester band, The Gentlemen) and keyboards player Tony O’Malley (ex-Kokomo), to augment the existing line-up. Several ond subsequently edited into the December 1977 album release, Live And Let Live, which reached number 14 in the Music Week chart and took up a four month residency in the Top 75. 10cc went on to have more hits, most notably with the mock-reggae Dreadlock Holiday, taken from their 1978 album Bloody Tourists. By the end of the decade they had secured more hit singles and albums than any other U.K. pop band of the Seventies. They effectively broke up in 1983, by which time Stewart and Gouldman were involved in their own separate projects. Stewart successfully produced Manchester band Sad Cafe and Gouldman teamed up with American singer-songwriter Andrew Gold to form Wax. They even briefly teamed up for a ‘comeback’ 10cc album in the early Nineties, albeit with limited commercial success. Two decades later after its original release Deceptive Bends remains one of the peaks of their illustrious recording career, and still sounds as amazingly fresh and inventive as ever.
